Getting in and out of Bethel – no road, no ferry
Bethel is not on Alaska's road system and the Alaska Marine Highway ferry does not serve Bethel or the Kuskokwim — the closest AMHS ports are in Southcentral/Southwest (Homer, Kodiak, Aleutian chain). Year-round, the way in and out is by air: Alaska Airlines jets to Anchorage, and Grant Aviation, Yute Commuter Service or Ryan Air to villages. In summer, boats and barges move people and freight on the Kuskokwim; in winter (roughly January–early April) the Kuskokwim Ice Road connects Bethel to river villages by truck and snowmachine. Check weather before any trip — fog and storms routinely cancel flights.
