The Tongass National Forest's Ketchikan-Misty Fjords Ranger District office (3031 Tongass Avenue, 907-225-2148, open 8am-4pm weekdays, closed federal holidays) issues personal-use firewood and timber permits, special-use permits, subsistence information and answers questions on trails, hunting access and the Misty Fjords National Monument. Public-use cabins are reserved online through Recreation.gov. The Southeast Alaska Discovery Center downtown (50 Main St, 907-228-6220; open daily 9-5 May 1-Sept 30) is the visitor-information side.
