First up: Kuuvak — the Iñupiaq name for the Kobuk River, meaning "big river" or "main river system." The Kuuvak is a vital connector, linking neighboring villages to each other and to the larger regions. Selawik National Wildlife RefugeKotzebueHey wait...those aren't loons! 👀 At first glance, the dark-colored water birds swimming and diving in Kotzebue Lagoon yesterday seemed like loons... BUT on closer inspection, you can see that they don't have any white coloration - and they also have a hooked tip on the bill. ⚓ This is a pair of *pelagic cormorants,* seabirds that are normally found in saltwater areas including Kotzebue Sound. While not a common sight in Kotzebue itself, these fish-eaters were probably stopping off for a quick meal en route to their winter home further south. During migration periods, you never know when an unusual bird might show up - so it's an interesting time to keep your eyes peeled! photo courtesy M.Sweeney

Dennis Jennings as the Tribe’s Executive Director following an extensive search. Dennis has served as the Tribe’s Acting Executive Director since June 2026 and previously served as Transportation Director. He brings several decades of leadership experience in the public sector, including 17 years with the City of Kotzebue, as well as extensive experience in transportation, public works, municipal planning, budgeting, and capital project management. As Executive Director, Dennis will provide overall leadership for the Tribe’s operations and work to advance the strategic priorities established by the Tribal Council. He will oversee Tribal programs, staff, finances and major initiatives while supporting long-term planning, strengthening partnerships, and advancing Tribal sovereignty.
