ASRC Shareholder Spotlight: Jacob Lane III (Oomittuk)
Original post
We are proud to recognize Jacob Lane III "Oomittuk” of Point Hope in our ASRC’s Shareholder Spotlight series. A dedicated subsistence provider, Jacob is committed to preserving Iñupiaq culture and passing on Iñupiaq knowledge and traditions to future generations. After inheriting the 75 whaling crew from his parents, Jacob and Della Lane Jr., Jacob and his family learned how to prepare ugruk (seal) skins for their umiaq, carrying forward a practice that has sustained Iñupiat communities for generations. As a community leader, search and rescue coordinator, devoted husband and father, Jacob is passionate about teaching the next generation the skills, values and traditions that are central to the Iñupiaq way of life. Through subsistence hunting, whaling and cultural practices such as skin sewing, he is helping ensure this knowledge continues for generations to come. Quyanaqpak and Taikuu, Jacob, for your contributions to Point Hope and our North Slope communities. Do you know an ASRC shareholder making a difference in their community? We want to hear about them!
