In observance of Indigenous Peoples’ Day, all UIC offices will be closed on today, Monday, October 12, 2026, and will resume normal business hours on Tuesday, October 13. Indigenous Peoples’ Day is observed nationwide on the second Monday in October and offers a moment to honor the histories, cultures, and contributions of Indigenous peoples across the United States. It is a time to celebrate identity, recognize enduring traditions, and reflect on the vibrance and diversity that shapes our communities throughout Alaska. Alaska was among the first states to recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day, beginning with proclamations in 2015 and becoming a permanent state holiday in 2017. With 229 federally recognized Tribes, this day carries deep meaning here. It reflects the enduring presence, knowledge, and strength of Alaska Native peoples who have cared for this land for thousands of years. From Iñupiat whaling crews of Utqiaġvik to cultural knowledge bearers, language teachers, artists, and community leaders across the state, Alaska Native peoples continue to guide cultural perpetuation, education, governance, and community well‑being. Their leadership, stewardship, and traditions enrich our communities and help shape a stronger future for all. Across Alaska, Tribal communities, organizations, and universities celebrate this day through cultural gatherings, storytelling, art, and education. These events highlight both heritage and ongoing achievements, reminding us of the vibrancy and diversity of the cultures that define Alaska. As an Alaska Native Corporation, Indigenous Peoples’ Day offers a meaningful opportunity to honor some of the Iñupiat values central to who we are, including Iḷagiigñiq (Family and Kinship), Piqpakkutiqaġniq suli Qiksiksrautiqaġniq Utuqqanaanun Allanullu (Love and Respect for Our Elders and One Another), Iñupiuraallaniq (Knowledge of Our Language), Qiksiksrautiqaġniq Iñuuniaġvigmun (Respect for Nature), among others. We invite you to take time on Indigenous Peoples’ Day to learn from Indigenous perspectives and celebrate Indigenous cultures, communities, and traditions. For those in the Anchorage area, an Indigenous Peoples’ Day celebration hosted by Alaska Pacific University is open to the community. #uicalaska #alaskanative #indigenouspeoplesday #utqiaġvik #iñupiaq #shareholdersfirst UIC CELEBRATING INDIGENOUS PEOPLES' DAY
