Good to know
- The state DMV page says road tests and vehicle inspections are temporarily unavailable at this office.
- NSB Police provides law enforcement across the Borough, including Utqiaġvik.
- Fire and emergency services are provided by the North Slope Borough Fire Department.
- Borough Health & Social Services runs public health and social-service divisions.
- Utqiaġvik’s electric, gas, water and sewer services are available through BUECI; the Borough supplies trash pickup.
- Land-use and development permit applications go through Borough Planning’s Land Management and Regulation process.
- The Borough identifies the community’s traditional name as Ukpeaġvik, meaning place where snowy owls are hunted. This names the place, not a separate government.
- NSBSD runs elementary and secondary education. The Borough’s FY2023 report assigns it financial responsibility for school budgets, taxation, debt and major capital construction.
- Barrow and Utqiaġvik are the same place: Barrow is the former name (the state DMV lists the office as 'Utqiagvik (Barrow)').
- Ukpeaġvik, 'place where snowy owls are hunted', is the community's traditional name.
- Utqiaġvik's airport (Wiley Post–Will Rogers Memorial) is owned by the State of Alaska, not the City or the Borough.
