Ketchikan Area Arts and Humanities CouncilJoin us TONIGHT at the Main Street Gallery for the Opening Reception of "All Aboard", a solo exhibit by Patrick Carrico from 4pm-8pm.
"Patrick Carrico is an author, illustrator, and audio producer whose work strives to capture the darker undercurrents of the North. Operating across the Alaska—from seasonal outposts in Southeast Alaska to the rail and highway corridors of the interior—his writing merges creative nonfiction, illustrative art, and landscape history and has been known to get him in trouble.
As a travel writer, he is the creator of unconventional, field-tested guides including R-Rated Guide to Cruising Alaska and Kesey to Callahan: Cruising the Columbia, which strip away the sanitized tourist-brochure gloss to focus on authentic regional character, industrial history, and localized lore. His recent article for Atlas Obscura has shed light on the ongoing environmental atrocity of the Connell Lake Dam in Ketchikan.
Carrico co-hosts and produces the podcast Termination Dust, blending archival soundscapes, dark local humor, and sharp cultural commentary. Whether writing, recording, or illustrating, his work remains firmly rooted in the stories of the working class, public infrastructure, and the distinct fringe aesthetics of subarctic life."

Ketchikan Area Arts and Humanities CouncilResponse has been incredible for the inaugural residency and classes of our Youth String Project! The act of building an instrument and materials library for our community is a monumental task, and we are incredibly grateful to Juneau Alaska Music Matters (JAMM) (especially the phenomenal Meghan Johnson) for their foundational donation of violins to our program. THANK YOU!!

Ketchikan Area Arts and Humanities CouncilMEET THE COMPOSER TONIGHT-6PM BAWDEN ST BREWING!
Composer Takeover Day #3: On Wednesday, I had the privilege of sharing my music both at the Ketchikan Public Library and with the Ketchikan Chamber Orchestra. Thank you all for having me!
The library features intriguing art by local Ketchikan artists - one piece, called “A Trip to the Library” by artists Evon Zerbertz and Rich Stage, floats above as one enters the library. Meanwhile, back of the library contains a very impressive, whimsical tree, made completely of fabric by artists Ann Carlson, Sherry Henrickson, Jackie Keizer and Deb Turnbull. One can find storybook characters on its branches, including the Very Hungry Caterpillar and Winnie the Pooh. My contact Lisa took great care to make sure I saw both pieces. I love how proud the Ketchikan community is of their local artists!
A special thanks goes out to Jeff Karlson for bringing me in to work with his chamber musicians. We read through the movement of an older score of mine for string quartet (written during my master’s degree and in need of some finer-tuning) called “Maynard” - a funky concept sketch that feature imitations of trumpeter Maynard Ferguson’s iconic high-pitched wails. My favorite part was hearing a cellist go “pizz. BOING???” with some confusion: there’s a first time for everything, and the group was very open to all my wacky extended technique ideas. I had to demonstrate a few because the score wasn’t 100% clear; I explained that this was an excerpt of a larger work that would normally have “front matter” (performance notes at the front of the score) that would explain the meaning behind the notation of each sound I desired.
I’m excited for tonight's event at Bawden Street Brewing at 6:00 PM, which will feature the reading of a string duet I originally wrote for LA Phil musicians - please stop by and say hello!
(The last photo is me with my husband, Chris, next to the library. We’re having an awesome time!) ⛰️204 shares
