Ketchikan Gateway BoroughKetchikan International Airport Emergency Response Drill 🚨
On Saturday, September 26, Ketchikan International Airport conducted its triennial emergency response drill, a Federal Aviation Administration-required exercise designed to test emergency response procedures and coordination between participating agencies.
The exercise simulated a commercial aircraft crash landing following multiple bird strikes, with 30 volunteers portraying injured passengers and a simulated aircraft fire. Emergency responders, airport personnel, and partner agencies worked together throughout the exercise, including from a simulated Emergency Operations Center at Fire Station 1.
Thank you to all of the volunteers, agencies, and community partners who participated in this important training exercise!104 shares

Ketchikan Gateway BoroughThe Ketchikan International Airport will conduct its triennial emergency response drill on Saturday, September 26, from approximately 9:00 AM to 1:30 PM.
The FAA-mandated exercise will simulate a major aircraft accident and include emergency responders, law enforcement, community volunteers, live fire and crisis actors portraying injured passengers.
During the drill, the community may see an increased presence of emergency vehicles at the airport and traveling between the airport and hospital. Simulated triage centers will also be established at both locations.
This is a planned emergency exercise and there is no cause for alarm. Regular emergency services will not be affected.

Ketchikan Gateway BoroughFeatured Animal of the Week - Boo!
Sweet Boo is an adult, black Domestic Shorthair who is looking for a very special person to call her own. 🖤
Boo has been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and currently receives daily medication to manage her condition. Because of this, she needs an adopter who is comfortable providing her medication each day and making sure she continues to receive the care she needs.
In return, you’ll get a wonderful companion! Boo is a friendly, loving cat who deserves a home where she can be cared for, spoiled, and loved. She may need a little extra attention, but we think the right person will agree that Boo is absolutely worth it.
Could you be Boo’s special adopter? Come meet her at the shelter!

Ketchikan Gateway BoroughAirport Terminal Expansion Update! ✈️
A new jet bridge is the latest addition at the Ketchikan International Airport terminal.
Sections of the new bridge arrived on September 15, and crews worked to install the bridge in sections.
The additional bridge will expand the airport’s passenger boarding capacity rather than replace an existing bridge.
We’re excited to see another major piece of the terminal expansion come together!

Ketchikan Gateway BoroughMayoral Statement to the Community of Ketchikan
September 18, 2026
At the Planning Commission meeting of September 15, 2026, a statement was made by Commissioner Darlene Dollimont-Svenson that was discriminatory against many of our citizens. While this statement was not made on behalf of the Commission or on behalf of the Borough, I want to share my regret that the comment was made by a Borough official, and that it was made on a Borough platform.
The Borough takes extra measures to ensure the fair, impartial, and ethical behavior of our officials and staff. Our representatives are trained to follow local, state, and national laws that govern our actions. I am proud of the way that our leaders take these laws seriously. The statements of this one official are outside of the Borough’s norm, and I take great exception to the statement made.
Over the years we have built collaborative working relationships with our fellow municipal and tribal governments and our state and national leaders. We very much value these relationships, and especially that of the Ketchikan Indian Community (KIC).
KIC provides a wealth of opportunity and services to our community that the Borough, City of Ketchikan, and City of Saxman, could not meet without KIC’s involvement and generosity. The leadership, guidance, and collaboration that is provided by KIC is of great benefit to every citizen in our community. I look forward to that continued networking and I condemn any action that would put that relationship in harm's way.
On September 21, 2026, the Borough Assembly is scheduled to consider a motion to condemn the statement made by Commissioner D-Svenson, and to urge the Planning Commission to censure her. As there is no provision in Borough code to remove her from office, I believe these actions will communicate and reinforce the Borough’s commitment to KIC and the condemnation of the regretful actions of this individual. Further remedial actions may be pursued. I call upon Ms. D-Svenson to resign from her position.
With deep respect for all of our citizens,
Austin Otos

Ketchikan Gateway BoroughFeatured Animal of the Week: Meet Spruce!
Spruce is a handsome DLH black adult male with plenty of personality! This friendly guy likes attention - but he also likes things his way. Spruce isn’t a fan of excessive cuddling, and he’ll politely let you know when he’s had enough.
Spruce would be happiest in a quiet, adult-only home with no other animals, where his people understand that sometimes love means giving a guy a little space.
If you’re looking for an independent companion who knows exactly what he wants, Spruce just might be your perfect match!
Stop by and meet Spruce at the Ketchikan Gateway Borough Animal Protection Department, 1111 Stedman Street, or call (907) 228-6660 for more information.
