Ketchikan Indian Community & Tribal Health ClinicTonight, our community showed up at the Borough Assembly meeting with pride, dignity, and purpose. On tonight’s agenda is a public hearing on Ordinance 2122, which proposes a process for removing appointed members of Borough committees, boards, and commissions. Accountability matters. Those entrusted to serve our community have a responsibility to treat the people they serve with respect. Our Elders, our families, and our children deserve that respect. Thank you to everyone standing alongside us tonight. We will continue to show up, speak up, and advocate for a community where our people are heard and valued.Borough Assembly Meeting Recap: Public Hearing on Ordinance 21223442927 shares

Ketchikan Indian Community & Tribal Health ClinicKetchikan, your voice belongs on the record. The U.S. Forest Service is considering a proposal to repeal the Roadless Rule, which protects millions of acres of the Tongass. This decision could affect the forests, salmon streams, deer habitat, and harvest areas our families depend on. Our knowledge of these lands matters. Share where you harvest, how your family uses the forest, and what changes could mean for your way of life. Your testimony becomes part of the official record the Forest Service must consider. Ketchikan Indian Community & Tribal Health ClinicOur homelands. Our responsibility. Our future. Ketchikan Indian Community, alongside the Southeast Alaska Conservation Council and the Center for Biological Diversity, is asking a federal court to halt the Shelter Cove timber sale while the lawsuit challenging the larger South Revilla logging project moves forward. Located near North Saddle Lakes on Revillagigedo Island, this proposed sale threatens old-growth forests in an area valued for subsistence and recreation. For our people, protecting the Tongass means protecting the lands and waters that feed our families, sustain our traditions, and connect generations. Our traditional knowledge and Tribal voices must help shape decisions about our homelands. KIC will continue standing up for our people and for the generations who deserve healthy forests, clean waters, and the opportunity to carry our ways of life forward. This moment carries more than 30 years of work by our Tribe and community to restore Ketchikan’s rural status and protect our subsistence way of life. For decades, our people traveled farther, shared what we had, and made do to put traditional foods on our tables. In 2025, the Federal Subsistence Board recognized Ketchikan as rural after KIC’s petition. As Alaskans consider the future of subsistence management, including potential policy changes, co-management opportunities, and constitutional amendment considerations, AFN is committed to hearing directly from Alaska Native communities to inform the development of positions and recommendations. These listening sessions are designed to provide a respectful forum for communities to share their experiences, concerns, priorities, and visions for the future of subsistence. We want to better understand the challenges facing subsistence users today, identify regional priorities, discuss Native and local involvement in management decisions, and hear what principles and values Alaska Native people believe should guide subsistence policy changes. The purpose of these sessions is to listen, learn, and ensure that community voices help shape future discussions—not to promote or oppose any specific proposal or management framework. We encourage participation from: • Tribal leaders and Tribal citizens • Elders and traditional knowledge holders • Active hunters, fishers, gatherers, and trappers • Youth and future subsistence users • Tribal natural resource and environmental staff • Community and village leaders • Regional organizations and Native corporations 𝐋𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 Date: Monday, September 28 Time: 4 - 8 p.m. Location: Beaver Clan House, 2706 S Tongass Highway Dinner will be served. Ketchikan Indian Community & Tribal Health ClinicNEW TRIBAL RESPONSE PROGRAM FOR CONTAMINATED SITES COMING SOON! Under its current leadership, Ketchikan Indian Community's Cultural Resources Department (CRD) is developing a stewardship framework centered on KIC’s responsibility to protect our lands, waters, traditional resources, cultural landscapes, and subsistence resources. Brownfields, contaminated sites, petroleum releases, and marine spills can directly affect traditional foods, harvesting areas, waterways, and culturally important places. Addressing these threats fits within the Tribe’s broader stewardship responsibilities. The CRD has identified active contaminated sites around Ketchikan Gateway Borough and created a Public Record of these sites to be investigated. The department intends to train and cross-train its staff in appropriate Tribal Response Program activities, including 40-hour HAZWOPER certification, contaminated-site identification, field documentation, spill awareness and response, site safety, environmental monitoring, and reporting procedures. Sometimes, care looks simple: ❤️ “Did you make it home safely?” ❤️ “Have you eaten?” ❤️ “I haven’t heard from you. Are you okay?” ❤️ “Want to go for a drive?” ❤️ “I’m here if you need me.” It can also mean sharing a meal, sitting together, listening without judgment, or reminding someone that they are not alone. You do not have to be a counselor to care. You simply have to be willing to reach out. Today, KIC Cares challenges you to check on someone you have not heard from lately. Send the text.
