Notify the site administrator or plant manager of incidents, problems, or concerns. Perform other tasks and assume other responsibilities as the supervisor may assign. Adhere to all District policies and regulations. Physical Requirements The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Maggie joined UIC Science as an Administrative Assistant in 2025 and quickly became an essential part of the team. She brings more than 30 years of experience in Utqiaġvik, including roles with the North Slope Borough, Iḷisaġvik College, the City of Barrow, and UIC. Her background includes operations, administration, grants, records management, and customer service. ASCF is a partner on this work. Right now, the Aullaaġvik Tribal Educator Apprenticeship Program has 23 apprentices. They live and work in their home communities. They come from: • North Slope Borough School District • Northwest Arctic Borough School District • Lower Yukon School District • Kuspuk School District • Yupiit School District • Hooper Bay Charter School • Knik Charter and Benteh STEAM Learning Academy • Tulen Charter School / Kenaitze Tribe • Alutiingcut Child Care Center These new funds will give our apprentices academic tutoring for their university classes. Barrow Volunteer Fire DepartmentDid you know it is Suicide Prevention Month? Arctic Slope Native Association/Samuel Simmonds Memorial Hospital hosted a Suicide Awareness/Prevention Walk in partnership with the North Slope Borough Health Department, North Slope Borough Fire Department, and Iḷisaġvik College. This walk brought many community members together to remember those who have died by suicide, support survivors of suicide loss, and help reduce suicide stigma. We started making signs and the walk at the Barrow Fire Station and ended at the Browerville Fire Station. We have another walking event happening on Tuesday, September 29th at noon at Tuzzy Library. This walk supports Mental Health Wellness Week and is hosted by Iḷisaġvik College Student Government Association and NAMI Alaska. We received close to 70 applicants with a limited enrollment of 18 total slots. Please do not be discouraged. We greatly appreciate your interest in participating in our CTE programs, and we hope to provide additional middle school intensive opportunities in the future. Even then, her priority was clear: integrating local culture into the curriculum through culturally relevant materials and local resources in the classroom, a commitment that remains at the heart of the NSBSD’s mission to raise students who are empowered, culturally rooted, bilingual, healthy, critical, creative, and lifelong learners today. That same lifelong dedication to our students and community is exactly why we were honored to welcome Patsy as our 2025 commencement speaker. North Slope Borough School DistrictView organization ›Exciting things are happening at the Qatqiññiaġvik Learning Center! Our Fall CTE Intensive is officially underway! From September 14 through October 1, students from across the North Slope are coming together at Qatqiññiaġvik Learning Center to learn new skills, explore careers, gain hands-on experience, and build friendships with students from other communities. Students are participating in Construction Trades I–II through the Tiny Home Project, Small Engines, and Photo, Video & Music Production. Tiny Home Project Twelve students are working together to build a tiny home while learning construction, measurement, framing, tool use, workplace safety, problem-solving, and teamwork. We asked students what they have enjoyed and learned during the intensive: > “I signed up for the CTE Intensive construction program, and I have learned a lot, including team building, measurement, and framing.” > “Some of my favorite things about the intensive are the friends I’m making, the work, the food, and lots more.” > “Doing activities, learning a trade, and making new friends.” Their comments show that our intensives are about more than learning a trade. Students are building confidence, making new friends, discovering new interests, and creating memories with students from across the North Slope. Building on Last Spring’s Success Last spring, students in our CTE Construction Intensive successfully completed a 10' × 10' shed. The fully insulated shed includes doors and a window, plywood interior walls, electrical outlets, lighting, and electrical service capable of supporting the operation of a welder. The District is now working through the process to sell the student-built shed, with the intent of using available proceeds to help support future CTE construction projects. The success of the shed allowed us to look toward an even bigger opportunity for our students - building a Tiny Home! A special Quyanaq to the North Slope Borough and Mayor’s Office for supporting the Tiny Home Project and providing a facility where our students can complete the build. We especially thank Mayor Josiah Patkotak for his assistance and support in making this opportunity possible. Because of this support, our students are taking the next step from building a 10' × 10' shed to constructing a Tiny Home, which we plan to complete during this school year. We also thank the NSBSD Board of Education, Superintendent’s Office, principals, counselors, teachers, staff, instructors, families, and community partners who continue to support QLC and CTE opportunities for our students. We look forward to sharing more as these projects take shape and our students continue building new skills, confidence, friendships, and experiences to take home to their communities.
