Many people make assumptions about aging, what it is like to grow “old” and how older age will affect them, but as we get older, it is important to understand the positive aspects of aging as well as its challenges. Research has shown that most individuals can help preserve their health and mobility as they age by adopting or continuing healthy habits and lifestyle choices. During Healthy Aging Month, start slow, and do what you can, as it’s never too late to start doing what’s good for your health.

Bristol Bay Area Health Corporation·DillinghamTalking about bad things that could happen, like a disaster or emergency, isn’t always easy. We may think we’re protecting the people we love by avoiding these conversations, but they are important to prepare and stay safe.
Starting a conversation today can help you and your family prepare for the unexpected. By taking simple steps, you can build your preparedness at your own pace:
• Set aside a time when everyone is calm and relaxed.
• Hold the discussion over a set time period, so decisions aren’t rushed, and people feel more comfortable talking about the topic.
• Talk about steps you’ve taken to prepare and encourage others to ask questions about preparedness actions that might work for them.
Lastly, be in the know, make a plan, build a kit, and be there for your community. To learn more about National Preparedness Month, visit: www.weather.gov/bmx/outreach_npm.5812 shares
