Igiugig Village Council·IgiugigIt is powerful to watch young people learn across lands, waters, and skies with their curiosity leading the way. Yuuyararta Science Camp brought people together to Camp Gibraltar, home to Yup’ik and Dena’ina peoples. For generations, people have learned through relationships—by watching, listening, sharing, and doing. Yuuyararta created space for those ways of knowing, all grounded in care for the lands and waters that have cared for the people of Bristol Bay since time immemorial. From learning about salmon and otoliths, plants, wetlands, and water quality, to how new technologies such as drones can support stewardship, participants shared how we care for our homes and how we can advocate for our people to be present in every space where decisions are being made. Quyana, Quyanaa, and Chin’an gheli to everyone who made this gathering possible, and especially to the youth who left asking for more land-based learning, more language, and more opportunities to know and care for the places we call home!
This camp was made possible by partnerships with Bristol Bay Native Corporation and Alaska Conservation Foundation with funding from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and Igiugig Village Council and The Nature Conservancy with funding from NOAA. We are deeply grateful to Beth and Rob Hill from Camp Gibraltar for being wonderful hosts and we also want to thank University of Alaska with in kind support from instructors in attendance, including UAA, UAF and Alaska Sea Grant.2612 shares
