Northwest Arctic Borough·Kotzebue🚨 BOATER SAFETY REMINDER 🚨
With current freezing temperatures across the region, the Northwest Arctic Borough is reminding residents to use extreme caution when traveling by boat.
Our Search & Rescue team have seen an influx of stranded boaters throughout the region. As temperatures continue to drop, becoming stranded on the water can quickly become a dangerous situation.
If you choose to travel by boat, please take extra precautions:
Travel prepared. Bring extra warm clothing, gear, fuel, food, and water in case your trip takes longer than expected.
📱 Carry a reliable means of communication. Bring an inReach or other satellite communication device, or a cell phone capable of satellite texting where available.
Let someone know your plans. Tell a family member or trusted person where you are going and when you expect to return.
🌡️ Check the weather and conditions before heading out. Freezing temperatures and changing conditions can make travel more hazardous than expected.
Know your route and your equipment. Make sure your boat, motor, fuel, safety equipment, and communication devices are ready before departing.
Stay safe, look out for one another, and make sure someone knows where you are going before you head out.

Northwest Arctic Borough·Kotzebue🎒 NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH: PACK A GO BAG!
Emergencies don’t always give us time to gather everything we need. A Go Bag is a simple way to make sure the essentials are ready to grab when you need to evacuate quickly.
This National Preparedness Month, build a Go Bag for each person in your household and keep it somewhere easy to access.
🎒 What should go in it?
💧 Water and easy-to-carry food
🔦 Flashlight and extra batteries
📻 Battery-powered or hand-crank radio
🔋 Phone charger/power bank
🩹 First-aid supplies
💊 Medications and important personal items
🧤 Extra clothing and sturdy shoes
🧼 Hygiene and sanitation supplies
📄 Copies of important documents
🐾 Supplies for pets and service animals
🧸 Comfort items for children
🦽 Items needed for accessibility or other individual needs
And don’t forget to personalize it! What works for one household may not work for another. Think about your family’s needs, your community’s hazards, and where you might need to go.
Once it’s packed, check it regularly. Replace expired food, update medications, change clothing as children grow, and make sure batteries and equipment still work.
