National parks are places where students can learn about history by standing where it happened, explore science by observing nature, and discover stories that help us better understand the people and places that shaped our world. Ted Ferry Civic CenterHow do you catch a fish without a fishing pole? With your bear hands. We’re here all week, folks. So is Fat Bear Week! For bears, fishing styles are often learned behaviors. Some bears have mastered many, while others stick to the one that work best for them. At Brooks River in Alaska's Katmai National Park & Preserve, you can observe many types of fishing styles including:⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ 🐻 The Stand and Wait: Bears stand on top the falls and wait for salmon to jump close enough to catch. Bears sometimes slip on the falls (usually when someone is looking) so they rarely shift position.⁣ Sometimes they misjudge and the fish hits the bear in the face. (Insert own metaphor for life) ⁣⁣⁣ 🐻 The Sit and Wait: Similar to the first one but sitting. Bears sit underneath Brooks Falls in the plunge pool or “jacuzzi,” and wait for salmon to swim to them. ⁣⁣⁣ 🐻 The Dash and Grab: Bears chase the fish and attempt to pin them to the river bottom with their paws. ⁣⁣Fast-food on the go! ⁣⁣⁣ 🐻 The Snorkeler: Bears look for fish under the water while seeing who can make the most bubbles. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣ 🐻 The Diver: Some bears avoid getting their ears wet, so diving is not for every bear. However there are some that will submerge themselves completely underwater to obtain food resources. You do what you got to do. ⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ 🐻 The Pirate: Arrgggg! It’s Cap’n Bruin Brownbeard the Hungry! Pirating bears plunder already caught fish from other bears. ⁣Keep an eye on the horizon. Avast ye scurvy bear! I’ve come for the fishes! ⁣⁣⁣ 🐻 The Sharer: Bears do not usually share food with others (bearing is NOT sharing), but some will share the spoils. (Not the Cap’n) This interaction occurs between bears that are highly tolerant of each other. ⁣BFFs (bear fish friends!) 🐻 The Belly Flop: A big splash requires big bear air, as the bear springs up out of the water or launches off the side to take a fish by surprise. This can be extremely successful or, well, a flop. Image: A bear perfecting the belly flop at Katmai National Park & Preserve. NPS /M. BradburnHow do you catch a fish without a fishing pole? Ted Ferry Civic CenterEveryone: Too bad summer is over Us: 🎃 The leaves are changing, temperatures are cooling, and somewhere in the distance, you can already hear the faint, unmistakable strains of Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas” being defrosted from its annual cryogenic chamber. Wait. Hold up. Fall is back, people. As of today, in fact. It’s the official first day of fall, otherwise known as the autumnal equinox, the yearly occasion when humanity briefly remembers that the Earth is, in fact, tilted. Fall is a great time to experience our national parks. The trees put on a spectacular display of color, the air gets crisp, and Fat Bear Week kicks off, giving us the rare opportunity to celebrate bears for doing what bears do best: eating an alarming amount of food and preparing for winter. Not a fan of fall? That’s okay. Just three months until winter. You can do it. Need inspiration for trip ideas and things to do this? Ted Ferry Civic CenterFat Bear Week is almost here! For bears, fat equals survival. Which is fortunate, because bears are exceptionally good at becoming fat. As winter approaches, bears enter hyperphagia, a period of intense eating when they spend much of their time packing on pounds. They gorge on calorie-rich foods, including salmon, berries, grasses, and other foods, building up the fat reserves that will fuel them through winter. Fat is the fuel that gets bears through winter. During the colder months, a bear’s metabolic rate drops dramatically, allowing it to survive largely by living off its accumulated fat reserves. Same. Over winter, a bear may lose up to one-third of its body weight. Not the same. So, Fat Bear Week may look like a competition for who is the biggest bear, but underneath all that magnificent chonk is a serious survival strategy. Industry heads, state employees and tribal entities are set to discuss Southeast Alaska issues ranging from housing, to fishing, to timber during the three-day conference. Following a welcome address, representatives from Southeast Conference, the Alaska Municipal League and the Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska discussed the state of the region. All highlighted the importance of working collaboratively to advance the region’s needs. “I think we’re a very resilient region,” said Tlingit & Haida President Richard Peterson on Tuesday. “I think we’re in better shape because of our partnerships, and as we continue to work together, we will get through whatever hard times we’re facing.” Peterson talked about the need for tribal consultation when regional decisions are made. He also spoke about Alaska’s upcoming gubernatorial election and the importance of voting. The conference hosted a gubernatorial forum with four candidates on Tuesday. Nils Andreassen from the Alaska Municipal League, which services municipalities around the state, also talked about the resiliency of Southeast Alaska. But he said despite the strengths of the region, there also needs to be a more concerted effort to address affordability, livability and sustainability. He said that will require hard conversations. “There is a lot of work to do to make sure that this is a region where people want to be and can afford to stay, and ultimately will be here for generations to come,” Andreassen said. Speakers also spotlighted challenges the region faces. Southeast Conference Board President and Juneau City Manager Katie Koester said one of the biggest challenges for Southeast Alaska is natural disasters. She said partnering with state and tribal entities can help mitigate disasters, like Juneau’s annual glacial outburst flooding. Koester said another regional challenge is aging infrastructure, which she said will require a lot of state investment. But, she said the region’s number one challenge is its aging population. “This issue of aging demographics and slowly losing our population, just is, you know, death by a thousand cuts,” Koester said. “It’s something that needs to be the number one issue that we address as a region because we don’t have a future if we don’t have our children.” She said shifting populations affect everything from schools to housing to job opportunities. Panelists also talked about what they hope to get out of Alaska’s next governor. They mentioned increased investment in state government, more focus on island communities, and a governor who isn’t going to sue Alaskans over tribal sovereignty. Southeast Conference will run through Thursday in Ketchikan. Hunter Morrison is a Report for America corps member for KRBD.
