Barrow Volunteer Fire DepartmentDid you know it is Suicide Prevention Month? Arctic Slope Native Association/Samuel Simmonds Memorial Hospital hosted a Suicide Awareness/Prevention Walk in partnership with the North Slope Borough Health Department, North Slope Borough Fire Department, and Iḷisaġvik College. This walk brought many community members together to remember those who have died by suicide, support survivors of suicide loss, and help reduce suicide stigma. We started making signs and the walk at the Barrow Fire Station and ended at the Browerville Fire Station. We have another walking event happening on Tuesday, September 29th at noon at Tuzzy Library. This walk supports Mental Health Wellness Week and is hosted by Iḷisaġvik College Student Government Association and NAMI Alaska.
